YazTheSpaz shares how childhood influences introduced her to the world of fashion photoshoots and talks about some recent shoots she’s in.
As a child, do you remember posing in front of the camera while your parents snapped away in awe at how cute you were?
Well, for me, that was a common occurrence. My father has been in the fashion industry, selling leather goods – garments, accessories, jackets – for over 25 years. For as long as I can remember, my sister and I would go to see him at work, take one of his jackets and be his model for the day. It was something so silly, though, looking back at it now, I see how it has inspired me today.
I entered the world of photography to share designers’ beautiful products by working with Muslim designers and companies, one being Rabia Z. I soon received enquiries from various photographers to work together with them, and I’ve never looked back.
One of those photographers is Lisa from Lisa M Vogl Photography. She is the kind of person who is completely passionate about fashion and photography. She has these visions of high fashion photoshoots and I have a passion to share those looks with the world, so we finally teamed up to bring her visions to life. We had our first official photo shoot a couple months ago in Orlando at the Grand Bohemian hotel. What a location – it was breathtakingly beautiful! After that shoot, Lisa and I worked together again on another shoot, for Wahat AlJalabiya, at a stunning location in Miami called Viscaya.
Another photographer I’ve worked with is Bilal Sheikh Photography. Bilal is a friend of mine, so working with him was a fun experience. We only did head shots but having to give an intense stare or a fierce look was difficult for me since just looking at him made me laugh – it was so hard for me to get into the serious zone with him around! Nonetheless, it was a successful shoot and the pictures were incredible.
Posing in front of a camera isn’t all that easy. Some might say it’s too easy, but the fact is that if you’re not passionate about it, or if you don’t know how to show or express emotions with your face, it’ll be more difficult for you.
You basically have to tell a story with your eyes, show feelings through your facial expression, and also be able to position your body to best showcase the designer’s garments. There have been times when I left a shoot with blisters on my feet or even with swollen eyes because my face naturally does not like a whole lot of makeup on it. Overall, however, I truly enjoy being in front of the camera.
The latest photoshoot I was involved in was with Lisa, once again – and guess who it was for? Aquila Style! This time it was an underwater shoot.
Next week I’m going to share with you all the juicy details and struggles we went through to get the perfect shots for Aquila Style. Watch for it!
