During my trip to California last week, I visited the seals of San Diego, sung my heart out with friends over karaoke and attended the largest and longest running Muslim fashion show in the USA! Fashion Fighting Famine took place in Irvine California on the 31st of March. In an earlier post, I gave you the rundown on some of the things to look forward to at the show. This week I’ll fill you in on what went down at this prestigious event and during my stay in California.

Let me start off by saying that this was the first time my sister Aysun and I had ever gone to the west coast of the United States. It was also the first time we had ever travelled together without our dearest mother. Upon our arrival in Los Angeles, my sister and I toured the homes of the famous, walked the Hollywood walk of fame, and even ran into a few celebrities on the way, such as Bruce Willis. Our favourite part of the first day of our trip had to be visiting Madame Tussauds wax museum in Hollywood. We got to ‘meet’ everyone from Will Smith to Conan O’Brien and even the president of the United States, Barack Obama!

Throughout the following days my sister and I met some unique and down-to-earth young women. I’d like to describe a few of the girls I got to personally bond with.

First on my list is Imaan Ali from the Hijablog – what a character she is. I don’t think I have ever met a girl with more spunk and randomness. Imaan is a PhD student at the University of Michigan with a focus on political science. She is also a fashion blogger who writes about her eclectic fashion sense.

Zamena and Anam Momin are wonderful friends of mine who own the company Hijab-ista Inc. We met exactly one year ago and have been great friends since.

Nura Afia, better known on YouTube by the name BabyLailaLov, is known for her awesome makeup tutorials and quirky personality. She came along with her sister Aisha and adorable daughter Laila.

After meeting all these amazing ladies, we bumped into Sana Rashid of modHijabi, who had come along with her sister Saman Hasan.

To top it all off, we had the opportunity to enjoy the company of Neelab Safi from Nisaa Boutique. Her collection happened to be one of my favourites and she is truly a humble and kind entrepreneur.

While hanging out with all these amazing women, we decided as a group to take a drive up to Los Angeles, where we spent a fun evening out singing karaoke. We left with one thing in common: a sore throat!

The next day brought the grand event that we’d all been waiting for: Fashion Fighting Famine, live in action! The event was mind-blowing. The head organisers of the event, Nida and Asmaa, did an incredible job making sure everything went as smoothly as possible. The décor of the evening had a classy and elegant feel, from the glittery walls to the huge gift-wrapped boxes and even the outstanding flower arrangements! I met fashion blogger Winnie Detwa, Amenakin from Pearl Daisy, Imaan Ali from the Hijablog, Babykhosh of HaniHulu, Nura Afia, many other beauty bloggers and designers, as well as loving supporters from the west coast! To top it all off, I got to reunite with a close friend of mine, Yuna Zarai, who gave an exceptional performance during ‘halftime’.

You’ll see from my pictures that fashion, modesty and beauty all collided on this one night. Insha’Allah you’ll be at next year’s Fashion Fighting Famine show where you can support a great cause (this year’s was the New Star Family Center) and have an opportunity to meet girls from around the world. I know I came home with new friends, clothes and adventures!
